Sherry Lansing, chair of the STOP CANCER 2014 Annual Gala in Los Angeles presented Mike and Lori with the 2014 Dr. Armand Hammer Philanthropy Award for four decades of initiatives in medical research and public health. In accepting the award, Lori noted that "cancer is very personal for us," citing several family members who succumbed to the disease; and Mike said, "Although private philanthropy is only a fraction of the resources our nation devotes to cancer research, it has an outsized leadership effect. Industry and government funding inevitably follows the lead of private giving, which focuses on the higher-risk/higher-reward programs that drive science forward." Mike was a business associate and close friend of the late Dr. Hammer, who established the STOP CANCER organization in the 1980s.
