First-grade teacher Maggie Hawk of Yellow Springs Elementary in Frederick, Maryland, got some help holding up her $25,000 award from Mike and Lori Milken and local education officials at a surprise notification that she was being recognized with a Milken Educator Award. Mike noted that Hawk, who struggled with learning issues growing up, now helps students with severe disabilities overcome their own challenges to make significant progress in the classroom. The Milken Family Foundation has awarded thousands of Educator Awards to public-school educators like Hawk across America.
